Delight in giving…

September, 2012

Dear Friends,

It’s an odd concept that Paul wrote to the church in Corinth – “God loves it when the giver delights in giving.”  Granted, Paul was not sending the Corinthians a pledge card like we are sending to you. But he was asking them for money.  You might have thought that he would have said that God loves it when the giver is generous – or sacrificing.  But he said that God loves it when the giver delights in giving.  What does he mean – delight in giving?  Your first thought might go to Christmas morning.  Actually there is very little in the world that brings more pleasure to a parent than to watch their children get excited opening their gifts.  Or you might think of helping someone in need, with the satisfaction that comes in knowing that you have helped them.

In truth, most people don’t connect the words ‘delight’ and ‘pledge cards’.  Most of us think of pledges as more of an obligation and less of a privilege.  But God wants us to see our pledges in another way.  Think of this card as a ticket.  This ticket gives access to a world where you can make a difference in so many ways, to so many people.  People we know locally, as well as, supporting global humanitarian needs.  We need to know our pledge makes a difference.  When we see the result, then we feel the delight.

Our work together in the church does so much more than money alone can accomplish.  We realize there are so many organizations that you can give money to but in the church, your pledge is a ticket to be a part of a living community.  What you give of time and resources you will receive back in friendship and spiritual support.  We are not changing the world alone, but as part of a loving family.  Our delight in giving is intimately connected to our delight in receiving.  It is this that God loves – our giving indeed changes the world because it fosters community and nurtures our spirit.
