Become a Literacy Tutor

Literacy and ESL (English as a Second Language) Tutoring  – The church is interested in providing volunteer tutors to help adults in our community who need assistance in learning to speak, read or write English. If English is your first language, you are an expert who could make a difference for someone who is struggling to learn. Classes for prospective tutors are offered through both the Literacy Connection of Elgin and McHenry County College.   The classes are required to become certified to tutor.  After certification, tutors are matched with learners.
The Literacy Connection of Elgin- Each month the Literacy Connection offers classes for tutors. The 12-hour course has a fee of $35 which covers materials and a background check.  Most of the classes are given at the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin, IL.  After completion of the course, the tutors are certified and TLC matches them with adult learners for individual tutoring.  For dates and times contact The Literacy Connection: Visit: www.elginliteracy.org Email: info@elginliteracy.org

McHenry County College offers a free 12-hour training course for volunteer literacy tutors at the college. In addition, the volunteers are required to do 10 hours of practicum experience in actual classrooms either at MCC or satellite sites where classes are offered for adult learners. After completion and certification, tutors may choose to either work as volunteer assistants in classrooms or to do individual tutoring with learners provided by the college.   For more information about their program, click here.
